Hall leads Devils over Canucks with goal, assist and hit

Things got ugly between the Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center Tuesday night.

Larsen was hit by Devils forward Taylor Hall at 14:27 and was on the ice for several minutes.

The only person on the ice that seems to give a damn about Philip Larsen is Jacob Markstrom, the Canucks goalie.

Video of the hit shows Larsen falling on his back in the second period after the hit from Hall's shoulder.

After the play, John Moore earned himself an instigator penalty when he challenged Chaput to a fight.

Kyle Palmieri, Taylor Hall and Ben Lovejoy were the scorers for the Devils as they beat the Canucks 3-2. However, this doesn't make the hit any less terrifying.

Hall's teammates certainly thought the hit was a clean one and it's likely the National Hockey League will, too. The Canucks-Devils game had turned nasty late in the first period. The answer to hit lower - or not at all - is easier said than done at game speed, but if player safety is the most important concern, perhaps that's where the discussion ends. Unfortunately, things get a lot harder again Thursday, when the Devils travel to Montreal. This was also their first win in regulation in the last 11 games.

Then, Devils' head coach John Hynes asked for an explanation from the referees as to the lack of a minor on Chaput, and New Jersey got a bench minor out of it.

The second period began with Vancouver tying the game after a series of passes between Daniel Sedin and Brandon Sutter resulted in Daniel's 8th goal of the season. He doesn't even deliver the shoulder, which suggests he recognized Larsen's vulnerable position and didn't try to hit him as hard as he could.

The hit from Hall went unpenalized, and though there is a slim chance of a suspension, according to Sportsnet, the hit is likely to have the National Hockey League reassessing its rules.

Zajac was cut, and there was a patch of blood on the ice.

The collision came behind the Vancouver net early in the second period.

The recent loss of Alexander Edler at the blue line offered more playing time for Larsen, who's been handcuffed both on and off the ice - he had a bacterial infection that wiped out his weight, strength, and confidence.
