IOC to retest Olympic doping samples for Russian athletes from 2010

Doyle BarkerDec 26, 2016

The inquiry concerns the possible manipulation of urine samples and, if found guilty, the athletes face disciplinary proceedings, the International Olympic Committee said.

"At this point in time, these 28 (out of the 95 samples) new cases are not AAFs (Adverse Analytical findings) like a positive doping test. However, the manipulation of the samples themselves could lead to an anti-doping rule violation and sanctions".

The 28 samples are now being re-analysed at the Lausanne Anti-Doping Laboratory.

The International Olympic Committee has begun disciplinary proceedings against almost 30 Russian athletes who competed in the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, after evidence that their urine samples were tampered with was found, making it all but certain that Russia will lose its first-place standing in the medals table from those Games.

Six cases involve cross-country skiers who are now provisionally suspended by the International Ski Federation (FIS), which did not identify them.

Professor Richard McLaren found evidence that more than 1,000 Russian athletes in more than 30 Olympic and Paralympic sports were involved in a doping conspiracy that began at least as early as 2011 and ran until 2015.

As a direct result, the I.O.C. announced it would re-examine the urine samples of all Russian Olympians who competed in the 2012 Summer Games in London and the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. The McLaren report claims that a number of samples were removed or tampered with and replaced with "clean" urine samples.

The IOC president, Thomas Bach, said: "This is the immediate follow-up to Professor McLaren's report".

The FIS said Russian Federation had "returned" the final meeting of the cross-country World Cup season, due to be held in March in Tyumen, as a sign of goodwill.

It has also pulled out of hosting a World Cup biathlon meeting in Tyumen, due to be held the week before the cross-country event.
