Obama Administration To Impose New Sanctions On Russia

Miranda GreerDec 29, 2016

According to CNN, administration officials say the retaliation against Russia will include harsher sanctions, diplomatic measures, naming individuals "associated with a Russian disinformation campaign" and covert measures that will not be formally revealed.

Graham insisted Russian Federation is interfering in all election everywhere around the world, and promised Senate action to "hit" Russian Federation over it. Critics fear that Trump, who has expressed a desire for warmer relations with the Kremlin, will take no action against Russian Federation.

Obama administration officials have come under attack from Democrats since the election for not sooner taking public action against the Russians.

"Let the new Congress and the new president deal with Russian Federation, pass new sanctions, much tougher than the ones we already have", Sen.

Russian Federation has denied allegations of trying to influence the U.S. elections, and President-elect Trump has denied being in league with Russian Federation.

An executive order issued past year already gives the president the authority to respond to cyberattacks conducted by foreign entities, but the order now does not include overseas interference in the USA electoral system.

Administration officials familiar with the matter told the publication that the sanctions will be unveiled after weeks of discussion on how the Obama administration will modify an April 2015 executive order in order to provide the USA president authority to respond to global cyber attacks that have an impact on the electoral system.

The April 2015 order allows the Treasury Department to freeze the assets of individuals or entities who used digital means to damage US critical infrastructure or engage in economic espionage.

"As much as I am concerned about what happened to us in the election, I am also concerned about what will happen to us in the future", the Post quotes an administration official as saying.

And about a week before the election, Washington sent a message to Moscow using a special crisis communication channel for the first time, asking it to stop targeting state voter registration and election systems.

The CIA and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have reportedly assessed that the hacking and subsequent data dumps were an explicit effort to help Trump attain the White House at the behest of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
