Minimum Wage Workers See Pay Increases In New Year

The minimum wage in MA moves from $10 to $11 an hour today. tying it with Washington as having the highest wage in the country.

Sunday's increase marked the final step in a series of three increases that Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed into law in 2014.

Workers across the country will see a bump to their paychecks in 2017. The National Federation of Independent Businesses has called the recommendation irresponsible.

Elsewhere, Oregon's minimum wage increases to $10.25 in July. Lawmakers didn't include that proposal in the budget that took effect July 1.

For employees at smaller companies with annual gross receipts of $299,000 or less per year after January 1, 2017, and for 14- and 15-year-olds, the state minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.

- In Arkansas, the minimum wage will increase from $8 to $8.50.

- In Alaska, the minimum wage will increase from $9.75 to $9.80.

Still, minimum wage earners in several areas of the nation woke up in 2017 making just a little more than in 2016.

The new wage only applies to companies with annual gross receipts of more than $299,000 a year.

The state of OH provided a 2017 Minimum Wage poster for those with questions. The Vermont senator, who is a proponent of a $15 minimum, wrote, "There is not a single state where working 40 hours/week at the minimum wage is enough to afford a one-bedroom apartment". That's because of a new minimum wage law passed by voters in November.

Along with workers in the leisure, hospitality and retail industries, education and health care workers will also benefit from the increased wages, which are estimated to add about $100 million to the state economy.

- In Florida, the minimum wage will increase from $8.05 to $8.10.
