Residents try to blockade rampant croc with wheelie bins in north Queensland

While millions of Aussie revellers rang in 2017 with friends and family, locals in the far north Queensland town of Karumba were spending New Year's Eve with a 3.5 metre crocodile.

The crocodile wandered into the backyard of a property at Karumba, in Queensland's gulf country, enjoying basking in the sun in the backyard for a few hours from about 6am.

A video uploaded to YouTube captured locals' disappointment when the crocodile, after taking a few tentative steps in the direction of the shoreline, performed an about face to return to his post at the house's front gate where he remained for the rest of the day.

After the croc moved to the front of the house, officers & locals opted to build a wall of wheelie bins to enclose the creature and attempt to direct him back to the water.

The town is more than 700km away from Cairns and was once a spot for crocodile hunting.

Crocodiles are a feature of life in north Queensland.

Officers then chose to surround the crocodile with hay bales to contain him until the wildlife officials arrived from Cairns.

Police were called to deal with the very big animal, with Acting Sergeant Jim Richards confessing he'd never seen anything like it in his 10 years in Karumba.

When the wheelie bin "funnel" plan was showing no signs of working, police then decided it was best to keep him in one place and ensure he didn't wander off.
