NBC Hires Megyn Kelly, Racist Attitudes and All

Miranda GreerЯнв 04, 2017

In addition to her own programs, Kelly will contribute to NBC's breaking news coverage as well as the network's political and special events coverage.

But Kelly wrote in her recent memoir-in which she alleged former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes had sexually harassed her-that price wasn't the most important factor in helping her decide her next career move.

"We're lucky to have her", he said.

Kelly is the second-most watched host on cable news, after her Fox colleague Bill O'Reilly.

It's also not entirely clear when Kelly will start at NBC News, as her Fox News contract isn't officially up until this summer. Those allegations came after Gretchen Carlson, another high-profile Fox News star, filed a lawsuit against Ailes claiming years of harassment.

It's worth remembering that Kelly, who did not deserve the ugly sexist rhetoric sent her way by Trump and others during this campaign, has also been a key contributor to the right wing echo chambers' deft use of racist fearmongering in all things. Her Fox show airs live at 9 p.m., giving her no time at home with her children in the evenings. The new deal with NBC will close out the most anticipated television news contract negotiations since Katie Couric signed with CBS News in 2006, for $15 million a year.

With NBC, Kelly will become anchor of a new one hour daytime program, according to a release from the network. He upped the ante in August when, after Kelly called him out for his sexist statements about women during a Republican debate, he said Kelly had "blood coming out of her wherever".

But still. We understand the idea of Megyn Kelly appearing on any network other than Fox is jarring.

It was not a foregone conclusion that Kelly would stay at Fox News.

Kelly tends to be attractive to younger and female audiences, who view her as a subtle and insightful counterpoint to Fox's stereotypical dogmatic conservatism. He tweeted his disdain for her and although they made peace when Kelly interviewed Trump for a prime-time special last May, the relationship never became warm. That led to the departure of Ailes and to significant questions about what path Fox News would take forward.
