Congressional Republicans to Trump: Trust US Intel, Not Julian Assange

Miranda GreerJan 05, 2017

WASHINGTON ― In a dispute between Russian intelligence services and the US intelligence community, the next president of the United States appears to be coming down squarely on the side of the Russians.

We'd like to know if the IC is right that it was the Russians who hacked, or if Julian Assange is telling the truth when he claimed to Sean Hannity that the Russians had nothing to do with it.

We are witnessing a great dustup between the incoming President, Donald Trump, and the people who will be his "intelligence community" in 16 days when he is inaugurated. "Very odd!" ― thereby casting aspersions on the USA intelligence agencies that have been investigating Russia's actions for months. "Also said Russians did not give him the info!"

President-elect Donald Trump is using WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to cast doubt over the U.S. intelligence community's case that Russian Federation was behind hacking affecting the Democrats ahead of the 2016 election. "No American should be duped by him", Graham tweeted. The Obama administration levied sanctions against Russian entities last week.

Asked what he would say if he were advising the president-elect, Card said, "Taste your words before you spit them out". This was all after he mocked the intelligence community over the "so-called Russian hacking". The president elect praised Vladimir Putin for not taking retaliatory measures, saying: "I always knew he was very smart!" Both have the potential to undermine the legitimacy of the Trump presidency. Both briefings will be conducted by the heads of relevant agencies, including the National Security Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the CIA and the Director of National Intelligence.

Assange has maintained that the documents did not come from a government.

In 2010 Palin branded the Australian whistleblower "an anti-American operative with blood on his hands" and said he should be hunted down in the way Al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders are pursued.

Congressional Republicans to Trump: Trust US Intel, Not Julian Assange

"Did it (WikiLeaks) change the outcome of the election?"

"The media collusion that hid what many on the Left have been supporting is shocking".

The Republican foreign policy establishment however, has been more resistant to such whiplash changes in views and allegiances.

The sources of the information, aside from the, as he wrote it, "intelligence" community, could become an issue as well, Cohen, the former DHS acting undersecretary, said.

The tweets in question show his referring dismissively to "the "Intelligence" briefing", in quote marks, and suggesting that his upcoming briefing was delayed because "perhaps more time needed to build a case".

Susan Hennessey, a fellow in national security law at the Brookings Institution, was quick to warn that it's inaccurate "to think of the intelligence community as a group that gets their feelings hurt very easily", but said the tweets could certainly have a lasting impact.

Intelligence officials are expected to brief Congress on their inquiry on Thursday.
