Ford Is Building Hybrid Mustang And F-150

Elbert EdwardsJan 05, 2017

Ford has announced plans to launch a range of hybrid vehicles by 2020, including an electrified Mustang and an all-electric small SUV. The SUV will have a 300-mile range and will hit the markets in the US, Europe and Asia by 2020.

The hybrid Mustang will offer "V8 power and even more low-end torque", Ford's press release explained, and its F-150 Hybrid will be able to "operate as a mobile generator".

But simply supplying more Wranglers wouldn't cut it in attempting to win over foreign markets that are typically wary of gas-guzzling American vehicles, and there aren't any nameplates more American than the Mustang and Wrangler.

The five green models mention above will be built at the company's Flat Rock Assembly Plant in MI, where the company is set to invest $700 million over the next four years.

The Ford F-150 pickup has been the top-selling truck in the United States for 45 consecutive years and the best-selling vehicle in the country for more than two decades.

As well as announcing the decision to introduce the new hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure-electric line-up, the vehicle maker has also announced it has cancelled plans for a new US$1.6 billion (A$2.2 billion) auto plant in Mexico. The carmaker talks about 7 of the 13 EV and hybrid models it is aiming to introduce in the next five years, with the news ranging from a (drum rolls) hybrid Mustang to an autonomous vehicle. Media reports suggest that Ford might employ the 2.3-litre turbocharged inline-4 engine for the hybrid model. How so? Because instead of investing $1.6 billion at the San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico, Ford will instead spend $700 million expanding Flat Rock and create 700 jobs in the process. Hmm. Other vehicles include a plug-in Transit Custom, and hybrid cars designed for police use, which are going to be built in Chicago.

Ford will also concentrate its autonomous vehicle development at their Flat Rock Plant, south of Detroit.

"The industry is changing; the infrastructure is happening", said Chief Executive Mark Fields, who predicted that within 15 years, global automakers will offer more electrified cars - hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery-operated cars - than gasoline vehicles.

Given Ford's so far anemic presence in battery-electric vehicles, some commentators suggested that enhanced start-stop systems might make up a substantial portion of those "electrified" Ford vehicles.
