Shock loss: Serena Williams makes early exit

Doyle BarkerJan 05, 2017

In her first outing in the Auckland tournament, Williams made light work in seeing off the Frenchwoman, with a 6-3 6-4 for the American on Tuesday.

Brengle saved five set points in the second set, which Serena won on a tie-break, but she maintained enough fight to see off the former world number one in the decider and book a meeting with Jelena Ostapenko, a straight-sets victor against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Parmentier was able to match Williams' power at times, but soon succumbed as she served a double fault while down break point.

On a day of disappointment for the family, Serena's sister Venus beat Jade Lewis 7-6 6-2 but withdrew with a right arm injury.

'I really think I played - I'm trying to think of a word that's not obscene - but that's how I played, ' she said after the loss less than two weeks before the year's first Grand Slam at Melbourne Park. It's a lot. I can't expect to win hitting that many errors. "I just couldn't get used to the wind". Because, when I'm actually hitting it right, she's like, 'Oh, God, this is nice, and then she hits a victor.

"It was my first match back in several months and I played a great player".

"I just played for every point", she said. Everyday I've practiced here has been no wind and of course today it was windy, so that was good.

In the Shenzhen Open, second seed Simona Halep was beaten 6-3 4-6 7-5 by Katerina Siniakova while fellow Czech Kristyna Pliskova beat qualifier Kai-Chen Chang 6-1 6-2. The current World No. 2 posted a straight sets win over France's Pauline Parmentier in their first round meeting.
