Ford Is Bringing Back the Bronco - and Jobs - to MI

Elbert EdwardsJan 11, 2017

Speaking at the Ford press conference at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show, Joe Hinrichs Ford's executive vice president and president for the Americas, said the new vehicle would be, "A no-compromise midsize 4x4 utility for the thrill-seekers who want freedom and off-road functionality, with the space and versatility of an SUV". Ford's Joe Hinrichs did reveal that the upcoming 2020 Bronco would be built in the USA, at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant. Watch Ford's Bronco announcement above. Ford hasn't sold a Bronco since 1996, so it's unclear what bits Ford will use for the new model. It is unlikely the new Bronco will sport this look, but some aspects could make their way into the final truck. The business case for the Bronco is less clear, as buyers have shifted away from traditional truck-based SUVs to car-based crossovers in the 20 years since the last Bronco was put out to pasture. That might mean a Bronco that's closer to Ford's Bronco II model, which was also built on the Ranger chassis. Now we just have to see if GM chose to bring the Blazer back into the fold to compete with the coming Bronco.

Midsize pickup trucks are one of the fastest growing segments of the US market.

At an event last week, Ford CEO Mark Fields said he was upbeat about incoming President Trump's commitment to the economy - a shift following the executive's criticism of Trump's call for a 35 percent tariff on Mexican imports previous year.

There are a bunch of things we don't know about Ford's new trucks. Hinrichs confirmed that the 2020 Bronco will be built on the 2019 Ranger's frame.

The company's MI assembly plant will be responsible for United States production, but as yet there is no confirmation of a right-hand drive program.

President-elect Donald Trump recently criticized the Ford company for their plans to to move production of the Ford Focus from the Wayne plant to a new facility in Mexico. The automaker did not give pricing details either, but Ford is known for keeping its cards close to its chest.

The Ranger has been in production for several years in foreign markets, but it left the US market several years ago.

There's one (unlikely) ray of hope for offroaders: the T4 Troller, a truck produced by a subsidiary of Ford in Brazil. As executive vice president Joe Hinrichs spoke onstage, video footage of a Europe-market Ranger rolled behind him; when he broke the Bronco news, only the Bronco logo appeared on the screen.
