Gangasagar stampede: Narendra Modi mourns loss of lives

Miranda GreerJan 17, 2017

Six persons have been killed and 15 others have been injured in the stampede that took place near Kochuberia in Sagar Islands. About 25 people were injured in the commotion.

Stampede took place on jetty number 5 while people were boarding the boat. A long queue of people had gathered at the spot and sensing delay in reaching their homes, the crowd got impatient and tried to board the vessel all at once, which resulted in the stampede. The Mamata Banerjee government has been insisting that the deaths were caused by heart attack and acute cold conditions and not a stampede as the pilgrims rushed to board the last vessel at Kachuberia ghats on Sunday evening. The sick were admitted at the camp hospital near Kachuberia and were attended to by a team of doctors.

Naval divers have been deployed to search for anyone who may have fallen into Muriganga river (distributor of the Hooghly river) during the mad rush, officials said. Hindu pilgrims come together to take a holy dip in River Ganga before she merges with the Bay of Bengal. "The rush was because there would be no vessel for about eight hours due to low tide", he said.

The area where the stampede occurred is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state.

According to CNN-News18, the situation has now been brought under control.

Earlier, on Saturday, at least 16 lakh pilgrims took the holy dip at Gangasagar on the occasion of Makar Sankranti and offered puja at the Kapil Muni temple.
