A play-by-play on Betsy DeVos' remarkable, combative confirmation as education secretary

Judith QuinnJan 20, 2017

According to the NYSUT website, the union's board of directors passed a resolution in December to take part in the Day of Action in "direct response to the controversial nomination of Betsy DeVos for U.S. Secretary of Education, a clear sign the president-elect will follow through on his plan to privatize public education".

"Mrs. DeVos will be an education secretary who is focused on the needs of each individual student and not on where he or she attends school", the letter said.

"Under questioning from Senator Bernie Sanders, she admitted that she had given $200 million to Republicans (including 10 of the 12 on the committee that interviewed her)".

As they say on Twitter: big, if true. "Actually, I believe that there's a lot that has gone right in Detroit and in MI with regard to charter schools", she said, citing a study that found Detroit charter school students on average do slightly better on state exams than their district school peers.

He said Devos is part of a group that has been criticizing public schools for years.

Watch the exchange, below. Minnesota Sen. Al Franken seemed pleased when he caught her off guard with questions about test proficiency and growth. Havemen, a former investor who became close to the Prince family, was sentenced in October to more than three years in prison for stealing $16 million from DeVos' mother.

On school vouchers: DeVos has long lobbied for states to allow parents to use public funds to pay private school tuition.

"As students, we recognize that the president-elect's platform and the appointment of billionaire Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education will accelerate the corporate privatization of education", the Portland Student Action Network wrote.

"Senator I think that's a really interesting idea and I think it's really great to consider and think about, but I think we also have to consider the fact that there's nothing in life that's truly free."
"I will not be conflicted, period". He pointed out she supports same-sex marriage and "absolutely never" advocated conversion therapy. Murray, the top Democrat on the panel, complained that the hearing should have been delayed until the Office of Government Ethics sent a letter on DeVos and any agreements she will make to ensure there are no conflicts of interest.

Her common-sensed reply was fantastic...

Trump's nominees come in 2 flavors - Evil or Inept.

Some of the Tweets mocked DeVos, but others raised concerns about her qualifications to lead the agency that oversees the nation's public schools. With assistance from DeVos and Republican legislatures across the country, Trump can return funding to critical programs such as DCOSP and showing the way for local communities to implement similar programs the way they know best.
