China urges the USA to stop Taiwanese delegation from attending Trump's inauguration

Miranda GreerJan 20, 2017

China issued a warning after Taiwan announced a group of lawmakers are planning to attend the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Taiwan is to send Yu Shyi-kun, former premier and ex-ruling party leader, to represent Taipei at Trump's inauguration.

"We once again urge relevant parties in the USA to allow no delegation sent by the Taiwan authority to attend the inauguration ceremony of the president, and not to have any official contact with Taiwan".

Beijing has said it is opposing Taiwan's attendance as it could lead to disturbance in Sino-US ties. Congratulating Trump on his election, the government pledged to "continue to strengthen Taiwan-US relations in future on the basis of excellent mutual trust and interaction".

China considers Taiwan a breakaway province, with no right to have any kind of diplomatic relations with other countries. Any official contact between foreign governments and Taiwan's officials comes under fire from Beijing. "There hasn't been any leader with such a narrow mind in all Chinese dynasties", he said, referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"We make this appeal one more time", Hua said.

Trump previously irked China by questioning its "one China" policy stating that America does not have to necessarily follow the "One China" policy, which recognises the People's Republic of China as one nation including Taiwan. "There is no room for bargaining", the newspaper concluded.

"I don't want China dictating to me, " he added.

Trump is to be sworn into office on Friday.

"The main growth market of English-language films out of the United States is actually China, not anywhere else", said Mr Wang, whose Wanda group owns a USA cinema chain, a Hollywood production company and the firm that runs the Golden Globe Awards. In early December, Trump broke decades of diplomatic precedent by having a 10-minute phone talk with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, which was described by Trump as a "congratulatory phone call".

The precedence limits direct talks between a U.S. president or president-elect and the leader of Taiwan, an island state off the Chinese coast.

Nonetheless, Washington has maintained commercial ties with Taiwan for almost four decades.

Yu added that China should understand the long-term friendship between Taiwan and the US and should not force the Washington to take such action. Washington is legally bound to regard any threat to the island as a matter of grave concern.
