More Southern storms possible; 2 tornadoes confirmed

Darin HammondJan 21, 2017

Severe storms are possible overnight Friday into Saturday from Louisiana to Georgia.

Columbia could be facing severe weather this weekend with two days of thunderstorms and a possible damaging wind threat. You're not completely out of the woods, but the severe weather threat looks more limited the farther north.

The rain should quickly come to an end Sunday with the day setting up to be rather windy with gusts of 30 to 35 miles per hour as temperatures fall back through the 60s and down into the 40s by Sunday night.

Those storm will likely come in two or three rounds, according to the NWS, and are forecast to bring with them gusts of wind up to 60-80 miles per hour, large hail and "excessive lightning strikes".

The last weather complex will move into The Midlands by Sunday and we will have a risk for severe weather.

"The greatest potential for severe storms is between 3 a.m. and noon Saturday", the email said.

The threat of storms will extend northward from the Gulf coast to northern Georgia and as far to the east as the coasts of northeastern Florida, Georgia and SC on Sunday. Gale force winds could develop in the Gulf of Mexico throughout the weekend.

Notes: A few moving parts still need to be pinned down to get a better idea on the timing for these storms.however, at this point it looks to be an afternoon event. We will see multiple rounds potentially.

Conditions are expected to take a turn for the worse Saturday night when the chance for thunderstorms rises to about 40 percent.

INTO NEXT WEEK: Calmer weather to start the week, as Monday will be cooler and cloudy, with a few lingering light showers. Thursday a cold front is expected to move into Alabama and that will allow for colder air to return to Alabama to end the week.
