Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura killed in vehicle crash in Dominican Republic

Yordano Ventura and Andy Marte were both killed in vehicle accidents in the Dominican Republic on Sunday, and while their deaths aren't related, there is one insane connection between the two Major League Baseball players.

"We have awoken this Sunday with this sad news that we have lost a special being", club president Winston Llenas said in a statement about Marte that was issued before Ventura's death became known. Ventura's tires went off the road and an overcorrection resulted in a rollover.

Officials stated there was no sign of alcohol at the scene, and a toxicology report will not be completed for 21 days.

Disturbing photographs emerged from the accident on Sunday morning that still showed the auto on its side.

He went 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA in 2014, his first full season in the big leagues, and helped the long-downtrodden Royals reach the World Series for the first time since 1985.

Ventura wasn't wearing his seat belt and was driving through fog at the time of the crash. Former Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident in Miami on September 25.

Ventura's funeral will take place in his hometown of Las Terrenas.

Former major leaguer Andy Marte, 33, died in a separate crash on the same day.
