Trump To Start Negotiations on NAFTA With Canada, Mexico

Miranda GreerJan 24, 2017

"Campaign promises are one thing, but what you're going to do as president is a different matter", said Pedro Pena, a worker at a parcel delivery firm in Ixmiquilpan, a town north of Mexico City which many migrants have left for the United States.

Meanwhile, Mexican 2018 presidential front-runner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced plans to tour major USA cities in February, raising the pressure on Mexico's government to assert itself with the Trump administration."Enough of being passive", Lopez Obrador of the leftist Morena party said in a statement.

These comments came at a swearing in ceremony for key White House staff as confirmed plans to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto to discuss changes to NAFTA, the trade deal he claims has shipped U.S.jobs to those other countries.

Trump's public schedule for Monday includes separate meetings with corporate and union leaders, an intelligence briefing, lunch with Vice President Pence, a reception for congressional leaders and a one-on-one meeting with House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Pena Nieto also reiterated his interest in maintaining dialogue. It relies on the United States to buy most of its exports.

"Our country believes in bridges.to promote good neighborly relations".

The meeting turned controversial after Pena Nieto and Trump contradicted each other's accounts of the encounter.

He threatened to suspend remittances sent home from the United States by Mexican migrants to their families if Mexico refused to pay for the wall.

On his United States tour, the former Mexico City mayor - who finished second in the 2012 presidential vote - will meet people of Mexican origin living in major cities, starting February 12 in Los Angeles, then to Chicago, Phoenix and others. A high-level Mexican delegation is scheduled to hold talks with Trump administration officials in Washington Jan. 25-26.
