Trump threatens to send feds into Chicago amid 'carnage'

Earlier this month, he suggested Mayor Emanuel should ask for federal help.

One of the show's guests, Horace Cooper, an adjunct fellow with the National Center for Public Policy Research, a conservative think tank, said, "I don't know another word besides "carnage" to describe the devastation that's been taking place".

But like so many of Trump's tweets, it appeared to be inspired by cable news.

A spokesman for Mayor Rahm Emanuel could not be immediately reached for comment, but in response to a similar Tweet from Trump on January 2, he urged the then president-elect fund programs like summer jobs and create tougher gun laws.

There were 762 murders, 3,550 shooting incidents and 4,331 shooting victims in the year alone, the department said.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter Tuesday night to rail against CNN and to sound off on Chicago's high homicide rate.

Johnson was referencing Emanuel's appearance on WTTW's Chicago Tonight, during which the mayor said federal funds and federal gun control measures would be welcomed by local government.

A statement from the Chicago Police Department on Tuesday night says the city's law enforcement would welcome an interagency effort.

"There were thousands of shootings in Chicago a year ago alone", the website reads. The newspaper had also reported on Monday that there were 228 shootings so far this year, up slightly from last year, and that homicides were up 24 percent so far this year.

Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. slammed Trump for threatening his city and said, "We need a plan, not a threat".

Trump repeatedly invoked Chicago's violent crime rate while on the campaign trail, and pledged to fix crime in what he called America's "inner cities".

As of Monday, Chicago had seen 228 shootings already this year, with 42 homicides, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune, making it the deadliest January in nearly 20 years. The city has recorded at least 42 murders through Monday-compared to 34 murders through the same time period past year.
