New White House Press Secretary Tries To Spin His BS

Judith QuinnJan 27, 2017

White House press Secretary Sean Spicer speaks during the daily White House briefing, in the briefing room of the White House in Washington. "All of those figures are less than the 1.8 million people who attended Obama's 2009 inaugural".

Signalling a possible break from a tradition in the press briefing room under the new regime, Mr Spicer did not take questions from a wire news service first but instead went to the New York Post, the Christian Broadcast Network and Fox News for the first questions.

However, Twitter has revealed that its live stream coverage of inauguration day presented by PBS NewsHour, reached 6.8 million unique viewers.

Host Chuck Todd responded by noting that Spicer is no longer just a campaign spokesman for candidate Trump, "He also serves as the spokesperson for all of America at times".

"You did not answer the question of why the president asked the White House press secretary to come out in front of the podium for the first time and utter a falsehood", Todd interrupted.

He said big, multinational agreements are not always in the interest of the US.

I don't want to pick on Todd, who pressed Conway hard on this, but it was nearly painful watching him try so hard to avoid using the obvious word here.

CNN's Jim Acosta questioned why Spicer made an issue out of the size of the crowd at Trump's inauguration and why Trump would bring it up during a meeting with Central Intelligence Agency personnel last week. "The facts are, sometimes when you look at a situation, in the same way that you can look at a weather report". In the future, Spicer might at least do reporters and the public a favor and let them know in advance whether press briefings will be dealing with real facts or alternative ones. "They are among the most dishonest human beings on the earth", President Trump said. Good question. Put it to Sean Spicer, who felt the topic was important enough to call an impromptu press conference and berate the media over it late on a Saturday afternoon.

Former counterterrorism official Malcom Nance told VOA that Trump needs to answer questions about his relationship with Russian Federation raised by USA intelligence reports and by Trump's strong public support for Putin and many of his foreign policy views.

"Busy week planned with a heavy focus on jobs and national security", Trump said in a tweet.

Like Rodney Dangerfield, the Trump administration apparently feels it gets no respect.

The White House press secretary further bolstered his case by claiming that 420,000 people rode the D.C. metro on Trump's Inauguration Day, compared to 317,000 on Obama's four years ago.
