HP expands ongoing battery recall to cover 100000 more units

The notebook computers were sold for between $300 and $1,700, while the batteries were also sold separately for between $50 and $90.

The recall, detailed by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, covers lithium ion units compatible with HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario and HP Pavilion systems sold between March 2013 and October of previous year through Best Buy, Walmart, Costco, Sam's Club and HP's site.

HP is expanding its notebook battery recall to 101,000 more units, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If the number reads 6EBVA, 6DGAL, 6DEMH, 6DEMA, 6CZMB, 6CGFK or 6BZLU, then your unit is potentially very risky. It reports nine cases of the batteries overheating or catching fire in Canada and the U.S., and no reported cases in Mexico. Potentially defective models include HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP Envy, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion models.

So far HP has received a single report of an additional battery overheating and causing around $1,000 in property damage due to charring. Customers with HP laptops are advised to check whether their computer is one of those affected, and if so, to stop using the battery with immediate effect.

"The battery bar code is printed on the back of the battery". Considering there's only been a single report, it's nice to see HP erring on the side of safety.

"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled batteries, remove them from the notebook computers and contact HP for a free replacement battery", the notice said. Canada has received one report, in which the notebook computer caught fire, with no reports of injuries.

The specific batteries included in this recall can be identified by their barcodes. The company urged consumers to recheck their batteries.

The CPSC worked with Samsung on the Galaxy Note 7 recall, and it's practically the only way to properly issue a product recall.
