Hostages taken in Smyrna prison, prompting statewide lockdown

Darin HammondFeb 02, 2017

All prisons in the state of DE have been placed on lockdown Wednesday amid a hostage situation at one of the facilities, the state's department of corrections announced.

A hostage situation was unfolding at a DE prison on February 1, 2017.

"The inmates have control of the building", Klopp said.

At least four guards and a counselor were taken hostage, the Associated Press reported at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The emergency situation has been unfolding at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna, which is about 12 miles north of Dover.

Initially a fire was reported late this morning, but our Mike Phillips says a hostage situation was confirmed by the Department of Correction earlier this afternoon.

In 2004, an inmate raped a counselor and took her hostage for almost seven hours at the Smyrna prison, according to an Associated Press report at the time.

Representative William Carson, a member of the Delaware House Corrections Committee, said he had been told it was an "apparent hostage situation".

The situation has been described as "an isolated incident", with "no threat to the public".

As CBS2's Dana Tyler reported, there is no threat to the public, but all DE prisons are on lockdown as a precaution. The all male facility houses 2,500 prisoners - some on death row. A department sharpshooter ended the standoff by shooting and killing 45-year-old Scott Miller, according to the report.
