Facebook Daily Active Users Hit 1.23B

The total revenue for the year 2016 was pegged at $27.6 billion. Adjusted EPS came in at $1.41 against analysts estimate of $1.31, a surprise of 6.7%, while revenues came in at $8.81 billion against analysts' consensus of $8.5 billion, a surprise of more than 3%.

Facebook has once again posted achieving record revenue, earning and the rise in user base as it continued to attract new users aboard it.

Daily active users were 1.23 billion on average for December 2016, rising 18 percent year-over-year; while 1.15 billion of those users connected to Facebook on mobile devices. Facebook's global ad revenue is expected to total $33.76 billion this year, according to forecasting firm eMarketer, making Facebook the largest ad publisher after. Facebook is free to use, as almost 2 billion do, and all those eyeballs are worth a lot of money to advertisers.

The company suffered a slight setback just before the market close when a jury in Texas ordered Facebook, its virtual reality unit Oculus, and other defendants to pay a combined US$500 million to ZeniMax Media Inc, a video game publisher that says Oculus stole its technology.

FB said that mobile advertising revenue represented about 84% of total advertising revenue in Q4, compared with 80% of advertising revenue in Q4 2015.

The mid-roll video ads seem to be the biggest opportunity here given Facebook's stockpile of video content and its hope for more high-quality, TV-style videos. The company added that if it wasn't for expenses, profits would have been $4.15 billion. Its website enables users to connect, share, discover, and communicate with each other.

Although Facebook plans to help finance some of that content initially, it ultimately plans to compensate content creators with a share of advertising revenue, Mr. Zuckerberg said.

Fiscal 2017 will be another investment-heavy year for Facebook, which is spending aggressively on key initiatives such as video, product development, Instagram, AI/machine learning and Messenger/WhatsApp.

"Over the next 10 years, we're going to continue to invest in these platforms and technologies that is going to give more people a voice and make sharing even more immersive".

Sandberg told analysts the last quarter, "political spending even within the USA alone was not a top-10 vertical for us".

Despite the business success, CEO Mark Zuckerberg pointed out that Facebook is on a mission to change the world.

"In the past, we've taken steps to reduce spam and clickbait, and now we're approaching misinformation and hoaxes the same way". Additionally, Facebook's average revenue per user in U.S. and Canada climbed to $20 in the quarter, which is significantly higher than its other global territories.
