Right to Work Not the End of Missouri Labor Bills

Darin HammondFeb 08, 2017

"Missourians are ready to work, and now our state is open for business!"

The new law is the culmination of decades of work by business groups and Missouri Republicans. Former Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed a right-to-work bill in June 2015. Unions, who more typically back Democrats, contend the inability to collect dues keeps them from bargaining for important rights and benefits for their workers and curbs their political influence.

Greitens, a Navy SEAL, had never held elected office before his 2016 election, but he was prepared for the opposition that right to work inspired. That's a trend that Missouri does not need to see.

This session's tussle over labor issues won't end with the bill signing.

"Right-to-work states, like SC, have seen first-hand that job creation and economic growth comes from expanded freedoms". There is a shortage of physicians in the state, especially in the rural areas, Murrow said, and giving students opportunities to fill those jobs helps grow the economy.

Greitens also has signing ceremonies scheduled Monday in Poplar Bluff and Jefferson City. The official signing of the bill came at the Capitol in the governor's office where almost all of the pro-right-to-work Republican legislators flanked Greitens, most notably Brown and Rep. Holly Rehder, the House handler of Brown's bill.

The recent cuts to the University of Central Missouri's state funding will increase in fiscal year 2018.

No state can compel workers to join a union, but in states without right-to-work protections, non-union employees can be compelled to pay union dues, regardless of their status as a non-union member. The governor had pledged to sign right to work while on the campaign trail. Union leaders are seeking to either change the reverse the law or change the constitution and make right-to-work illegal in the show me state.

Organized labor says the legislation will lead to lower wages and have an uncertain impact on economic growth.

"When you factor in cost-of-living, workers make about 4 percent more in right-to-work states than they are in forced unionism states", Vernuccio said.
