Scarborough Mocks Senate Dems for Suggesting Jeff Sessions Is a Bigot

Darin HammondFeb 09, 2017

When the Massachusetts Democrat attempted to read a letter from Coretta Scott King about attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions, McConnell cited a Senate rule which bars Senators from impugning the motives of one of their colleagues. Elizabeth Warren have collected more than $250,000 for the Democrat's re-election campaign since the Republican-led Senate voted to silence her Tuesday night.

King wrote that when acting as a federal prosecutor, Sessions used his power to "chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens".

McConnell stood by his accusation that Warren had violated Rule 19, a rarely evoked chamber regulation that prohibits senators from insulting each other on the Senate floor. Despite her plea to continue reading the letter, senators voted along party lines (49 to 43) to force Warren to take her seat.

"She was warned. She was given an explanation". In it, she urged senators not to confirm Sessions - whose nomination did indeed fail.

As the news of Warren's silencing spread Tuesday night into Wednesday, social media users began to use his statement as a rallying cry of sorts. She then took to Facebook Live and read the letter by King, saying "the Republicans took away my right to read this letter on the floor - so I'm right outside, reading it now". Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) during the debate on Sen.

Now Sessions is a senator and is set to be confirmed as our nation's attorney general.

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) is sworn in before the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation hearing to be the USA attorney general January 10, 2017 in Washington, DC. This allegedly violated an obscure Senate rule, leading Warren to be barred from speaking any further during the debate.

In her blistering speech against Sen.

And this is exactly what the presiding officer of the Senate, Sen. These letters were penned in 1986 when Sessions was up for a federal judgeship.

So, just to reiterate, Republican Senators refused to allow their Democratic colleague to read the very relevant words of a legendary civil rights activist.

Warren appealed the ruling, arguing she was simply quoting something another person had written about Sessions.

A pair of party-line votes supported this freaky interpretation of the rules, which if taken to its logical conclusion, could effectively silence meaningful debate on any presidential nominee who is a sitting senator.
