Facebook's 'Lite' app has over 200 million users

Facebook said Wednesday that Facebook Lite, a lightweight version of the regular Facebook app for mobile phones, has doubled its number of users in less than a year and now serves more than 200 million monthly active users globally. In its nearly two years of run, Facebook Lite app has been able to double the number of users from that in March 2016.

"In many areas, networks can be slow and unable to support all the functions available on Facebook".

According to Mashable report, Facebook Lite app has been launched in over 150 countries including India, Brazil, Indonesia, and Mexico.

Facebook said that it is soon going to roll out the FB Lite app in countries such as South Korea, UAE, Italy, and Israel. The app is now only for Android as it is aimed at users with low-end smartphones and slower internet connectivity.

FB Lite was reintroduced in 2015 an app with a total size of less than 1MB, primarily focusing markets where internet access is slow or limited.

To further its reach, Facebook also announced some updates to the app including the ability to like, comment, and share posts. Her post gives the example of Sao Paulo-based wedding photographer Altiery Monteiro, who used FB Lite to use less data and save money.

Facebook Lite has helped businesses as well as customers in regions where Internet connectivity isn't as strong, said Chief Operating Officer Sherly Sandberg.

Facebook's investment in the developing world is paying off. But gradually the app was rolled out in other parts of the globe as well. While Free Basics failed to impress the government authorities and regulators, the Facebook Lite appears to have struck the right chords.

Performance improvements are a given with any update, especially when the company wants to assure a fast, reliable connection to the social network no matter what.
