The storm is expected to have passed over the city completely by the early evening.

Schools in NY were closed as well as in other areas of the northeast including Philadelphia and Boston.

Winter storm warnings were in effect in Boston and Philadelphia as well as New York City today, where city public schools were closed and gusty winds blew snow sideways down the streets of Manhattan.

FOX6 News counted six scheduled to depart from Mitchell Airport to the northeast were cancelled Thursday, February 9th.

- A huge winter storm began to hit the Northeast Thursday morning, but effect of the snowy weather are being felt all across the country.

A half foot of snow or more could fall in a matter of hours Thursday morning as an intense storm quickly moves through the Philadelphia region as temps drop to freezing and below.

Cuomo said at 2 p.m. that the snow in New York City appeared to be tapering off, but he said this storm should not be taken lightly.

"The last time we had a storm of this nature, accumulation turned out to be much higher than originally anticipated", Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker warned, saying forecasts were calling for 8 to 14 inches across the state.

Wednesday saw temperatures of almost 60 degrees in New York City, and Thursday will be a little, er, different.

He said state workers will work through the night to be "all systems go" for tomorrow's morning commute.

In advance of Niko, many airlines have posted travel alerts warning passengers their flights could be cancelled.

The flight-tracking site FlightAware.com says more than 2,000 flights for Thursday have been canceled.

Delta Airlines: Delta and its partner KLM are waiving change fees until February 12 on flights to and from 24 airports along the East Coast, but you can not have already checked in for your flight.
