NY Giants Release Victor Cruz

Doyle BarkerFeb 14, 2017

The Giants have re-emerged as a playoff contender in the NFC and with Cruz's savings, they can make necessary moves to add to their deep roster; maybe moves that can get them back to another Super Bowl. The NFL Network's Kimberly Jones first reported the news of the Giants' transaction Monday.

Cruz, 30, was due to count $9.4 million against the cap next season and $8.5 million in 2018. The Giants are expected to officially announce Cruz's release later Monday, the source told Schefter.

Before the 2016 season, the Giants renegotiated the five-year, $45 million contract that Cruz signed in 2013.

Cruz had a career high of 1,536 yards in 2011 and 10 touchdowns in 2012.

Cruz suffered a torn patellar tendon in 2014, cutting his season short after six games.

Victor Cruz used 2011 and 2012 to set the National Football League on fire, combining for 168 catches for 2,628 yards and 19 touchdowns, which prompted the Giants to sign him to a one-year deal that was quickly followed up with a five-year extension.

He did things right on the field, becoming one of the Giants' greatest receivers after an unexpected beginning.

While Cruz is clearly no guarantee, it wouldn't do the Eagles much harm by signing him to an affordable, short-term deal. Despite Cruz being cut, he certainly had a nice tenure with the Giants.

That year he led the team in receiving yards, and his 99-yard touchdown catch against the Jets sparked the Giants' championship run.

Cruz's career, however, was ultimately derailed by recurring injuries. The NFL is tough, and there is no room to let legends ride out a final season to say goodbye.

But I do think this is at least an option the Titans should consider.

This is especially true for Cruz, the undrafted rookie agent from UMass, a player who grew up in the shadows of the Meadowlands to eventually play for his hometown team.
