Toronto Raptors Trade Terrence Ross For Serge Ibaka

Doyle BarkerFeb 15, 2017

Orlando has agreed to trade Serge Ibaka to Toronto for Terrence Ross and a 2017 first-round pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. Wow. Magic GM Rob Hennigan acquired Ibaka in a draft day deal in exchange for the huge cost of Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova (who the Thunder traded to the 76ers for Jerami Grant), and the 11th pick (Domantas Sabonis).

Ibaka has had little impact on the 21-36 Magic, averaging about 15 points and seven rebounds per game.

Even with some of the sheen having come off Ibaka since his peak in Oklahoma City, he is still a massive upgrade over what the Raptors have at power forward, particularly with Patrick Patterson out of the lineup. Regardless of how many points he scores, his presence will make life easier for Raptor guards Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Norm Powell and Cory Joseph. Orlando's attack still needs significantly more work, but Ross represents a step in the right direction and he arrives on a reasonable contract ($10 million this season and $10.5 million in each of the next two seasons).

Orlando had felt in recent weeks that Ibaka might leave in free agency this summer.

Ross is now enjoying one of the better seasons of his career, averaging 10.4 points and 2.3 rebounds on 44-percent shooting.

The Magic get a player in Ross who is in his fifth season in the National Basketball Association and could flourish in a bigger role depending on how the Magic utilize him. The Raptors don't have LeBron James, but on paper, they match up much better now. There's reason for optimism with this team and I don't think this is the only trade they're going to make either.

Ross, who played two years of college basketball at the University of Washington prior to turning pro, is shooting a career-best 44.1 percent from the floor this season while knocking down 37.5 percent of his 3-point shots. With Ibaka gone, Aaron Gordon will shift over to power forward, a move that could give Ross a starting gig at small forward.

Raptors coach Dwane Casey has said all season long that the something is defence.

Orlando Magic forward Serge Ibaka (7) shoots the ball over Toronto Raptors forward Pascal Siakam (43) during the first quarter of an NBA basketball game at Amway Center.
