Champions League: Bayern Munich thump Arsenal, Real Madrid too good for Napoli

Doyle BarkerFeb 16, 2017

With Real Madrid scoring in a record 33 consecutive home games in the Champions League and Napoli finding the back of the net in 10 of the 11 away matches they have played since the tournament's inception, goals seem to be on the cards at the Bernabeu.

Alexis Sanchez equalised for the visitors, scoring on the rebound after Manuel Neuer saved his 30th-minute penalty, but that seems of little outcome now before the second leg in London on March 7. More than that, though, it highlighted just how good Insigne can be - few players have the vision to catch Navas out like that, then have the touch, patience, confidence, and sheer skill to take Hamsik's ball first time and do that with it. Karim Benzema has since equalized for Real Madrid as we approach halftime.

After Napoli's surprise start against Real, Madrid hit back hard, scoring three unanswered goals in the first leg. Napoli lost 3-1 on aggregate. Milik, of course, missed four months of the season and in his place Jose Callejon helped chip in with some important goals.

Despite having a relatively inexperienced manager and a squad not used to playing in matches of this degree of importance or pressure, Napoli didn't seem to be one bit over-awed, star-struck, or any other hyphenated cliche that translates to "unprepared for the match".

Napoli hopes Real Madrid's recent struggles against Italian teams will continue. Even after they went down early in the second half, Napoli didn't panic - they kept on like they always do and still stayed very much in the game.

Real Madrid have been on fire this season with only 2 losses this season. "Now we have the return leg at the San Paolo Stadium and I'm sure that we will fight even more".

Kroos put Madrid ahead from just inside the area in the 49th minute after Cristiano Ronaldo cleared a defender to set up the German midfielder.

Summer signing Arkadiusz Milik was fit enough for the bench after a long injury layoff, whilst James Rodriguez deputised on Madrid's right wing in place of the still unfit Gareth Bale.
