Russian missile deployment violates treaty

In 2014, the Obama administration condemned Russia's testing of the cruise missile, arguing that it violated a Cold War-era treaty banning land-based American and Russian intermediate-range missiles. "I've said before we need to set firm boundaries for Russia's behavior - and enforce them to the hilt".

Secretary of Defense James Mattis is due to visit NATO's headquarters to meet with his counterparts Wednesday.

Reports of the recent missile deployment have further complicated US-Russia relations and come as the White House finds itself without a national security adviser following the forced resignation of Michael Flynn on Monday.

But now that he's in office, Trump is being tested.

"Russia's deployment of nuclear-tipped ground-launched cruise missiles in violation of the INF treaty is a significant military threat to US forces in Europe and our NATO allies" Said Senator McCain.

The Russian spy ship Vicktor Leonov had made a port call in Cuba prior to moving north, where it has been monitored off the coast of Delaware Tuesday, the official told the AP.

Trump himself, though, repeatedly praised Putin on the campaign trail as well as since being elected, while offering few if any criticisms.

According to the Stoltenberg, the INF treaty played a large part in eliminating nuclear weapons that threatened Europe and NATO allies, and attacks on the treaty could harm worldwide security.

He said that "any non-compliance of Russian Federation with the INF Treaty would be a serious concern for the alliance".

Sen. John McCain of Arizona echoed the sentiment, saying the missiles pose a "significant military threat to U.S. forces in Europe and our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies", and that the move "requires a meaningful response".

The United States originally signed the intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) with the Soviet Union, and it was honored later by its successor states.

The missiles are nuclear-capable, said Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, dealing a hefty symbolic blow to nonproliferation efforts.

But because the U.S. upheld its end of the treaty, it has no comparable nuclear-capable cruise missiles with which to match Russian Federation.
