The latter was unable to keep up the pressure on the second run as she skied out before Holdener raised hopes of a Swiss win when she laid down a solid second effort to go into the lead ahead of Sweden's Frida Hansdotter with just Shiffrin remaining.

Worley, who also won world gold in this event in Schladming in 2013, enjoyed a 0.38sec lead over the field after the first run and held her nerve on the second for a combined time of 2min 05.55sec.

Shiffrin, of Eagle, Colo., finished third in the first GS run, then stepped it up for the second run, especially on the bottom of the course with her strong finishing style.

"It happened nearly as flawless as it could have", Shiffrin said.

The Olympic gold medalist earned her third straight slalom title and she became the first woman to do so since Germany's Christl Cranz in 1939.

American Mikaela Shiffrin won a record-equalling third consecutive world slalom gold with a dominant victory at the Alpine World Ski Championships.

"I didn't see my time until I got all the way through and I knew I had a good run, but I didn't know it was that good until I saw the time", said Shiffrin.

Winning the first run by 0.38 seconds over Holdener, Shiffrin crushed the second run, on a course set by her coach Mike Day, to extend her victory margin to 1.64 seconds.

The 2017 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz concludes Sunday with men's slalom. "I was thinking, 'Oh that's cool, (Wendy) must be happy, but today is my day, not yours'".

She said: "There have been lots of challenges but lots of fantastic days, today was a really good day so I'm happy".

Worley, born to an Australian father and French mother, joins an elite band of racers to have won two giant slalom golds - only Anja Paerson, Deborah Compagnoni, Mariele Goitschel and Vreni Schneider having previously achieved the feat.

Shiffrin was.34 seconds behind Tessa Worley of France, who won her second gold medal of these World Championships. "But I felt really good about my second run. I was just trying to ski fast", Shiffrin told CNN's Alpine Edge.

She now has three medals in the last three World Championship appearances, with one silver and two bronzes.

Veith could only finish 22nd, over three seconds behind the new champion.
