Rockets fired at Israel from Egypt's Sinai, army claims

Miranda GreerFeb 22, 2017

At least two projectiles fired from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula landed in an open area in southern Israel on Monday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said, in the second such incident this month.

The website cited sources in the Israeli army as saying that the warning sirens did not go off in the area in which the rockets exploded.

Five members of the Egyptian branch of the terrorist militia Islamic State were killed in an Israeli airstrike in northern Sinai, the group said late Sunday.

It wasn't immediately clear who fired the shells but Islamic militants in Egypt's lawless Sinai have been behind a number of such attacks in recent years. The report said the strike targeted a cell preparing to fire rockets at Israel. They were reportedly planning to launch missiles.

Earlier in February, the Islamic State fired rockets at the southern Israeli town of Eliat.

Isis claimed responsibility for the Eilat attack. They were traveling in a auto in Sinai near Rafah, on the border with Gaza.

Egypt is one of just two Arab countries that have signed a peace treaty with the Jewish state.

IS has been waging a deadly insurgency against Egyptian security forces in the Sinai but it rarely attempts attacks against Israel.
