North Victoria to acquire 3 solar farms totalling 320 MW

This growth brings the state closer to Governor Cuomo's standard for 50% of electricity to come from renewable energy sources by 2030.

There's also a stack of solar in the pipeline - more than 886 MW of additional capacity was under development in the State as of the end of a year ago, which is enough to power more than 150,000 average homes.

The growth was supported by the Long Island Power Authority, the New York Power Authority, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, as well as other public and private sector backers. According to the West Texas Energy Consortium, many organizations are aggressively looking for property on which to build new solar projects.

There were 64,926 projects were installed through the end of 2016, compared with 8,989 through the end of 2011.

But that's not all: The growth of the solar industry has also attracted almost $1.5 billion in private investment, spurring growth in seven regions of the state of more than 1,000%.

"Clean, renewable energy will help the state meet its aggressive energy goals, make electricity more affordable for New Yorkers and bring about a more resilient and versatile energy system", said Richard Kauffman, chairman of energy and finance for NY. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas believes that solar power is gaining ground throughout the state, especially as utilities feel greater pressure to embrace clean energy.

Western New York saw a 554% increase in megawatts installed from 2011 to 2016 and a 481% increase in projects installed in the same time period. Together, the plants use 1 million solar panels. But the utility is shifting gears and intends to develop about 600 MW in the next couple of years alongside projects it has recently completed.

Earlier this month the Council estimated that the projects will add up to 2,250 MW of newly installed capacity, creating up to $5 billion in investments and nearly 3,000 direct jobs.
