Washington Wizards Acquire Nets Forward Bojan Bogdanovic

Doyle BarkerFeb 24, 2017

Washington will also get forward Chris McCullough in the deal and send a lottery-protected 2017 first-round pick, Marcus Thornton andAndrew Nicholson to Brooklyn, according to multiple reports.

The Washington Wizards were in the trade market for a bench scorer and defender.

Averaging over 14 points in 27 minutes per game for the Nets, Bogdanovic has become an under-the-radar scorer in just his third season in the National Basketball Association.

This isn't a surefire deal that automatically lifts the Wizards into the Eastern Conference Finals, but it was a necessity to keep them in contention with teams like the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors for the second seed.

Bojan will be a restricted free agent this offseason and the Wizards will have the option to protect their investment by matching any offer sheet Bogdanovic signs. The Wizards have won 18 of their past 21 games and surged up the standings after a slow start under new coach Scott Brooks. It was also mentioned that he is shooting 36 percent from the three-point area this season. Lou Williams was a name thrown around plenty, but Houston pulled the trigger first by sending Corey Brewer and a first-round pick in exchange for the veteran.

Getting the younger players experience is the goal for the Nets the remainder of the way.

While Porter (46.7 percent) and Beal (40.2 percent) have been excellent from behind the arc, no one else on the team has proven to be much of a consistent threat from deep. Moving off Nicholson's contract for the next three seasons while taking on McCullough's $1.4 million salary for next season means the Wizards are sitting at $91.9 million committed to 10 players next year (plus the stretched salary of Martell Webster that remains on their books).

If any major updates occur with the Wizards before Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline, this post will be updated.

Bogdanovic joined the Nets as a rookie in 2014-15. Following the National Basketball Association champions' first practice after the All-Star break - LeBron James was given the day off - Lue said he enjoyed his time with Sanders.

More importantly this trade brings some balance to the Nets lineups and frees up minutes for young players who need them. Andrew Nicholson is headed to the third team of his career, having played just 28 games for Washington. "He's a good dude". He was averaging 6.6 points per game. Sanders announced his comeback last month.
