Issa calls for special prosecutor on Russian interference in election

Miranda GreerFeb 27, 2017

When Bill Maher on his show Real Time pressed GOP Rep. Darrell Issa of California on whether President Trump's appointee as attorney general, Jeff Sessions, should investigate reports that members of President Trump's campaign had contact with Russian officials, Issa agreed an independent prosecutor is needed. Republican Representative Darrel Issa said in an interview late Friday he believed Sessions and his deputy, also a political appointee, needed to separate themselves from the Federal Bureau of Investigation probes related to Trump.

He said the House and Senate Intelligence committees should pursue their investigation into the contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

"You can not have somebody, a friend of mine, Jeff Sessions, who was on the campaign and who was an appointee".

See Issa's conversation with Maher below.

On Sunday, White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said congressional investigations on Russian Federation and the campaign should be allowed to go forward before a special prosecutor appointment was considered.

"You are right that you can not have somebody, a friend of mine - Jeff Sessions - who was on the campaign and who was an appointee", California Rep. Darrell Issa said Friday on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher". But he said it would not be enough for Sessions to recuse himself and assign the matter to a deputy, because "that's another political appointee". This is a bad guy who murders people who runs a gas station with an economy the size of Italy but is screwing up things all over the world that we've been doing "working with". "There may or may not be fault, but the American people. are beginning to understand that Putin murders his enemies". "We're extremely confident that, whatever review, they're all going to come to the same conclusion - that we had no involvement in this".

Trump has denied a connection to Russian President Vladimir Putin. At a news conference last week, the president said: "I have nothing to do with Russian Federation".
