Current visa holders likely safe under Trump's new travel ban

Trump is expected to sign the new measure Wednesday after federal courts suspended his first order.

Barely after a week in office, President Donald Trump had issued an executive order that banned visa holders from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for 90 days; and all refugees for 120 days, indefinitely for those from Syria. The White House has pledged to keep fighting for it in court.

The officials told the Associated Press that six other countries - Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen - will continue to be a part of the travel-ban list.

The original executive order, signed last month, applied to existing visa holders as well as new applicants.

The travel ban order, as clumsily implemented as it might have been, given its initial barring of permanent residents ("green card" holders), is supported by the majority of the American people.

At the urging of the Pentagon and State Department, President Donald Trump is removing Iraq from his travel ban list. A White House spokesman said he had no comment on the substance of the new order.

And unlike the hastily signed original order, portions of which were suspended by multiple courts, the new version is not expected to affect green card holders or people already in possession of United States visas, the official said.

One of the options for the White House is to issue an order that allows all people from those countries who are already lawful permanent residents of the USA or hold valid visas to continue traveling without interruption.
