Call for Action: IRS Tax Refunds Waiting from 2013

Brittany BishopMar 06, 2017

IRS spokesperson Bill Brunson says these individuals have not received their refund, because they didn't file a 2013 federal income tax return.

"We're trying to connect a million people with their share of 1 billion dollars in unclaimed refunds for the 2013 tax year", IRS Commissioner John Koskinen told Forbes.

Island taxpayers who expect tax refunds have been motivated in recent years to file early, knowing they no longer have to wait years to get their tax refunds. If you don't, that cash becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.

There's no penalty for filing a late return if you are due a refund, the IRS said.

The estimated median potential refund for 2013 is $763, which means half the refunds are more and half less, the IRS said. He says it can be hard for people to get their W-2 or 1099 from three years ago because the taxpayer may not have the same employer. The IRS estimates more than $21 million in unclaimed refunds may be available to Louisiana taxpayers. That delay was stipulated by the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015, in order to allow the IRS more time to weed out fraudulent credit and refund claims.

"What they're missing out on is they may be entitled to a refund for example if they were employees and they had federal withholdings taken out, they may be missing out on their refunds all together", Villanueva said. Many low-and-moderate income workers may have been eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, which was worth as much as $6,044 for 2013.
