Nadal has no answer to Querrey power in Acapulco final

Doyle BarkerMar 06, 2017

"Querrey reached the final by beating Novak Djokovic's conqueror, Nick Kyrgios, pulling off a 3-6 6-1 7-5 triumph to end the controversial Australian's run".

The second seed heads into the final after demolishing third seed Marin Cilic 6-1, 6-2 in just an hour and 23 minutes yesterday.

epa05828258 Rafael Nadal of Spain prepares to serve the ball to Marin Cilic of Croatia during their semifinal match at the Mexican Open tennis tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, 03 March 2017.

The world No.40 who knocked out defending champion Dominic Theim to book the semis will face "King of Clay" Rafael Nadal in the final tonight.

"I'm happy with my focus in important moments, saving break points with good shots", Nadal said. Sam is playing great.

Nadal, the second seed, was seeking a first hard-court title in over three years but he was no match for the world number 42.

Querrey is ranked No.40 in the world, so he could be forgiven for having stage fright against one of the greatest tennis players ever, however, it was the American who won the first set in 29 minutes after breaking Nadal with a crosscourt backhand victor.

A delighted Krygios said that he doesn't change his game when he meets top players. "My serve is the best part of my game, and I had one of my best serving matches tonight".

Nadal will face the American Querrey, a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victor over Australian Nick Kyrgios.

The 21-year-old Australian beat Nadal in Wimbledon (2014) and Federer in Madrid (2015). "I really like playing here".

It allowed Querrey, who had beaten three top-10 players, plus Britain's Kyle Edmund, on his way to the final, to capitalise in the tie-break and dispatch the 14-time major champion for his ninth ATP title.
