97-year-old twins freeze to death after falling outside

Two 97-year-old twin sisters apparently froze to death Saturday after they fell outside and were stranded overnight just steps from one of their Rhode Island homes.

When they arrived, the officers found 97-year-old Martha Williams face down by her auto.

Both were found dead the next morning, and police believe they may have frozen to death.

Cops think Jean may have then tripped on a rug on the garage floor as she went inside to call for help.

LaCross says police don't suspect foul play.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, a spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Health told The Post early Monday, but extremely cold temperatures overnight Friday may have been a factor, LaCross said.

Haley, of Barrington, was subsequently found in the garage. As the night wore on, temperatures dipped to 16 degrees.

A neighbor passing by their house in the morning went to pay them a visit.

Police recovered the bodies of Jean Haley and Martha Williams on the property of 21 Opechee Drive at about 8:11 a.m. on Saturday. Neighbors contacted said the same.

A 97-year-old woman apparently slipped and fell while walking to her auto. Haley lived along the Providence River waterfront in Barrington for more than 60 years.

Police believe Williams and Haley returned home around 8.30pm on Friday evening. He was an Army captain in World World II and was described by the Journal as "instrumental in liberating concentration camps in Belgium".
