NASCAR at Atlanta: Another strong run for Chase Elliott comes up short

Judith QuinnMar 07, 2017

Harvick looked to have the race win on lock, he even won the first two 85 lap stages, but a pit lane speeding penalty during the final round of pit stops relegated the Stewart-Haas Racing driver to the back of the field. But, after a late yellow came out when Austin Dillon lost power, the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford eclipsed the 45 miles per hour speed limit going into the pits. After the race was over Larson spoke about his Atlanta finish, this was the second week in a row that he was leading late in the race but was not able to come through with a win.

In the nightcap of a NASCAR doubleheader at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bell held off fellow Tundra driver Matt Crafton in a two-lap shootout to the finish for his first win of the 2017 season.

DUBAI TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Andy Murray captured his first title of the year and became the first British man to win the tournament in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in its 25-year history when he defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2. Closing after this race for its first major repaving in over two decades.

The resurfacing of the track in the Atlanta suburbs - which was last repaved in 1997 - was announced in January.

And this, from Chase Elliott: "There's something that I think a lot of guys are kind of aware of that goes on on pit road, and that's something we need to address kind of internally". What's perhaps most impressive about Earnhardt's recent treks in Hotlanta is the fact that Earnhardt has completed ever single lap, last failing to complete the entire race back in 2007, and that was only due to a late race accident.

"It's good from a Ford perspective when you see three or four cars in the top 5 or 6, you know how strong the Toyota's and Chevy's have been".

"I didn't think I was pushing it", Harvick told his crew over the radio. "I didn't want to get my momentum broken". Sunday's race will reflect well all those years successfully sliding around dirt ovals where the track conditions constantly change and the high line nearly always prevails. Other short odds to win are Jimmie Johnson (6/1), Kyle Busch (6/1) and Brad Keselowski (15/2). That's why I try to commit myself to the bottom throughout the race. "Here at Atlanta, I don't do a good enough job up top".

The green flag on the "Folds of Honor/Quick Trip 500" is set to drop at about 2:45pm on Sunday afternoon.

"Our auto was really good", Elliott said.

"No one likes repaves", said Jamie McMurray. We don't do anything with the engines, just put them in.

Thanks to the boost of those extra stage points, Harvick leads the points standings by four over Daytona 500 victor Kurt Busch and six over Atlanta victor Brad Keselowski. He is 13 points out of the top five and 27 behind point leader Kevin Harvick.

Elliott said he expects the problem to be corrected by next week's race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
