Most Americans want a special prosecutor to probe Team Trump's Russian Federation ties

Darin HammondMar 09, 2017

While Donald Trump has denied having contact with Russian officials prior to his inauguration, old reports have resurfaced in which the U.S. President met with Russia's ambassador to the U.S. last April in the midst of his election campaign.

Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak listens to then-presidential candidate Donald Trump speak about foreign policy at the Mayflower Hotel, Washington, April 27, 2017.

The federal government has launched multiple investigations into Russia's interference in the 2016 US presidential election and potential contacts between Moscow and the Trump campaign.

"I believe an easing of tensions and improved relations with Russian Federation, from a position of strength, is possible". Trump warmly greeted Mr. Kislyak and three other foreign ambassadors who came to the reception'.

White House officials described the encounter as brief and non-substantive, saying that Trump only attended the reception for five minutes and that multiple foreign ambassadors were present.

After Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and others were taken to the woodshed by Trump on Friday, Priebus reportedly spent an hour calling reporters and trying vainly to convince them - on a not-for-attribution basis, of course - that no woodshedding had taken place.

"The big point here is the President himself knows what his involvement was, and that's zero", she told reporters last Friday. 'And I think that he's the primary person that should be held responsible, and he had no interaction, and I think that's what the story should be focused on'.

During his confirmation hearing, Sessions was asked what he would do if anybody associated with the Trump campaign was found to have contacts with Russian Federation.

As part of its investigation into whether associates of Trump had improper contact with Russian officials during the 2016 campaign, the Senate Intelligence Committee sent letters to unspecified "organizations, agencies and officials" in late February asking them to preserve materials that might be relevant to the investigation, The Washington Post reported.

He's attempting to limit the personal damage by recusing himself from participating in an investigation of Mr Trump's links to the Russians and what role they had in getting him elected. Last month then-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn was forced to resign over a phone call with Kislyak.

But there's something in between polite (and ineffective) opposition and the kind of outright declaration of war that progressives announced when they learned the GOP had taken not only both houses of Congress but also the White House. "I have nothing to do with Russian Federation", he said. Haven't made a phone call to Russian Federation in years, ' he said.

In a February press conference, Trump insisted that the issue of Russian Federation was "a ruse".
