Hyperloop One reveals DevLoop and Gulf plans

But the Hyperloop One track would be a first for a complete test of the system, including the actual vacuum tube and all.

Lloyd also added that a Hyperloop network in the region could make any major city in the Gulf Cooperation Council (with member states that include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates) accessible within 1 hour.

LLoyd said the Gulf is "potentially one of the best places" to introduce Hyperloop, envisaged by billionaire Elon Musk as a virtually friction-free travel system in an airless tube, and that he's now spending three out of every four weeks in the region, with a subsidiary to be established in the United Arab Emirates later this year.

The Hyperloop system is a new mode of transportation, capable of connecting to all modes of existing transportation and helping individuals be anywhere and move anything with on-demand autonomous transport.

The new test track - or DevLoop - 30 minutes outside Las Vegas, brings that vision a step closer to reality. Since that test in May of previous year, the company has undergone considerable changes and corporate drama, but CEO Rob Lloyd told me in January at CES that it's now at the point where the technology is a reality, and all that remains is successful execution of the concept.

The city is exploring possible routes for the first ever Hyperloop, a high-speed transportation system that uses a pipeline to carry passengers and goods in levitating capsules. The startup Hyperloop One (which is not affiliated with Musk) has begun construction of a full-scale test track, known as the DevLoop, in the Nevada desert.

"Tying together the Middle East region would produce greater virtual density, without congestion and pollution, spurring innovation, productivity, job growth and more powerful sharing of knowledge, labor and investment", said Lloyd in a statement.

As just a test, the Nevada hyperloop pods won't be carrying any passengers.

However, the cost of the system could be one barrier, with estimates of the UAE Hyperloop running to more than £52million per mile.

The first commercial installation is set to travel around 100 miles from Dubai to Abu Dhabi in 12 minutes.
