Two People Have Died After Eating Trendy Cheese Made From Raw Milk

"Consumers that have any of these soft raw milk cheeses from Vulto Creamery should return the cheese to the purchase location for a refund", according to the recall notice.

Vulto Creamery announced a recall of its Ouleout, Miranda, Heinennellie, and Willowemoc soft wash-rind raw milk and cheeses Tuesday.

Officials with Vulto Creamery chose to voluntarily recall the cheeses after the FDA found the bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes in lot number 617 of its Ouleout.

Product photos of all four cheese items being recalled along with a brief description are shown.

A multi-state outbreak of Listeria linked to the consumption of soft cheese has sickened at least six people so far, two of whom subsequently died.

Six people were hospitalized in Connecticut, Florida, New York and Vermont, including two fatalities in Connecticut and Vermont, the CDC said on Thursday. The cheeses were distributed nationwide, with most being sold in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic States, California, Chicago, Portland and Washington, DC, according to the recall announcement.

After gathering evidence about various cheeses eaten by the people who became ill, CDC identified Ouleout cheese from Vulto Creamery as the likely cause of the outbreak. If you have any of this soft, wash-rind raw-milk cheese, please do not consume it.

In pregnant women, listeriosis can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor and serious illness or death in newborns.

Stores including Whole Foods have issued their own recalls related to the products in multiple states including NY, where the bulk of the outbreaks-though not the deaths-have occurred.

CT health officials said cheese from Vulto was sold at Whole Foods in Fairfield.
