Williamson closes in on ton as New Zealand impress

Live updates of day three of the first test between the Black Caps and South Africa in Dunedin.

The Proteas began day two at 229 for four but Neil Wagner's dismissal of Dean Elgar for 140 - with the left-hander adding just 12 to his overnight score - was the catalyst for a collapse.

Following that slump, the Proteas were ineptly in trouble from a disciplined New Zealand bowling attack looking to further the visitors' misery.

But Williamson and Jeet Raval sparked the innings with a 102-run stand, a record second-wicket partnership for New Zealand against South Africa, before Raval went for 52.

Bavuma needed an innings of substance to quell the criticism that had gathered around like malevolent clouds‚ and he responded with a sturdy 64‚ his first half-century in eight test innings.

SA go into the Test series after beating New Zealand 3-2 in the recent one-day global series, where Rabada topped their bowling figures.

Elgar admitted to being surprised New Zealand had dropped "their trump card" in strike bowler Tim Southee to make room for an extra spinner. Toss: won by South Africa.

Quinton de Kock (10), undoubtedly the world's best number-seven batsman, was uncharacteristically cautious and once again the strategy failed as wickets fell without many runs being added.

Given the vulnerability of their batting order and the need to build a heavy first innings lead, the pressure has been ramped up on Williamson to lay that platofmr and bat for much of the next six hours to ensure his side get into a position where they can win the match.

But as the New Zealand bowlers exhausted, South Africa added 90 for the loss of one wicket in the middle session and 76 without loss after tea.

South African-born Wagner, returning to top level cricket for the first time since breaking a finger on his bowling hand five weeks ago, removed Hashim Amla and JP Duminy in one over on his adopted home ground.

Jimmy Neesham was New Zealand's other successful bowler taking the valuable wicket of du Plessis for 52.

Tom Latham was dropped during the one-day series and there was no immediate upturn in fortunes against the red ball when Vernon Philander switched to round the wicket, drawing him into pushing away from his body.
