Women share what International Women's Day means to them

Inspired by striking Yemeni bodega owners in NY and the Day Without Immigrants, organizers of the Women's March called for the strike.

While a strike is meant to shut down the economy, Utah women focused more on meeting face-to-face with lawmakers, after failed attempts throughout the legislative session.

"Even for the women that are in chains, that are not able to be here - we also want to be able to give light to them as well in their situations", said Dr. Shanika Johnson of Milwaukee, who participated in the event.

ACPS has been in contact with other jurisdictions about the day, Lloyd says, but "ultimately the decision is ours, because it's about how students are affected in our school district".

"Historically, International Women's Day was one of reflection, but we wanted to use the momentum from the march for action", said Tabitha St. Bernard, a Brooklyn-based fashion activist and one of several Black women who helped stage the historic march.

With so many female staff members refusing to work, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in North Carolina and Alexandria Public Schools in Northern Virginia have told around 25,000 pupils not to attend.

Yet, many schools in Washington remain largely unaffected by the upcoming march. "It is entirely about the safety of students and the district's inability to operate with a high number of staff absences", said the statement. We strike for them.

"How is causing another woman to possibly lose a day of pay or to spend more money that she already can't afford on childcare helping other women?"

Women make up more than half of the United States population, yet still face discrimination in almost every facet of our lives. If they couldn't, they were encouraged not to shop at stores except those run by women or minorities. "Has the school system planned for this scenario?" wrote Patty Moses Ellis. "I wear this flowers in recognition of my awareness of the unique and relevant cross-section of racism and sexism and my fight for those women at every turn".

Similar criticisms were leveled at the Women's March for being a movement that appealed to people in positions of privilege.

"One would be to take the day off of work if that's a possibility".

Tamara Miller is organizing a local event and says she hears those concerns.
