World's fattest woman loses 18 stone in just THREE weeks before surgery

The name of the women is Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, who previously weighed around 500 kilos, had not left her house in Egypt in over two decades until arriving for Mumbai.

A spokesperson at the hospital said: "Eman successfully underwent a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy. She's been battling with her illness for 36 years".

Abd El Aty is now at Mumbai, India's Saifee Hospital, where she's lost more than 220 pounds since arriving in January.

Doctors plan to make Eman lose at least 100 more kilos (200 kg in total) over the next 6 months and are surprised at the rapid rate with which the patient is shedding pounds.

She is still believed to be the world's heaviest woman ahead of American Pauline Potter, who weighed 46 stone (293kg) last July.

Ms Abd El Aty arrived in Mumbai in February on a chartered plane, and was lifted by a crane into Saifee Hospital.

There is no history of obesity in her family, inclining the doctors to suspect a genetic mutation may be responsible for the uncontrolled weight gain.

"We are trying to get her fit enough to fly back to Egypt as soon as possible", the hospital said in a statement.

She was operated at Mumbai's Saifee Hospital by a team of doctors led by bariatric surgeon, Dr Muffazal Lakdawala.

Eman was reportedly born with elephantiasis - a parasitic infection which causes extreme swelling in a person's limbs and arms. Once her condition stabilises, we will send her back home.

She was put on a strict 1200-calorie high fibre and protein diet to reduce fluids in her body and lost a staggering 18 stone within a month enabling doctors to operate.

She also suffers from sleep apnea, hypothyroid, diabetes, hypertension, kidney problems and fluid retention.

Bariatric surgery is a procedure that reduces weight loss by restricting the intake of food the stomach can retain. Following a bariatric surgery, patients can lose up to 75 per cent of their body fat in a year.
