An Undocumented Immigrant Arrested After Speaking To Reporters Has Been Freed

She has been released on an order of supervision, her lawyers said, meaning she could be detained again until her DACA status is approved.

Daniela Vargas at the March 1 press conference in Jackson, Mississippi. According to her petition, one of the ICE agents who had participated in the raid on her home said to her, "Remember me?"

"We're gonna show great heart, DACA is a very, very hard subject for me, I will tell you", Mr. Trump said at a press conference in February.

Vargas arrived in the United States with her family when she was 7, and she was granted permission to live and work in the USA thanks to President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Her attorneys celebrated her release, but warned there will continue challenging the government's actions in the case. Peterson said that it was expected that Vargas would soon be returning home.

Orders of supervision mean either alternatives to detention (like ankle bracelet electronic monitoring) or supervised release, which requires a person to report to an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement office once a month or once every few months.

On March 1, Vargas - who arrived in the US from Argentina when she was 7-years-old - was arrested by ICE agents after she spoke at a press conference organized by the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance in Jackson, Mississippi. A shot time after the news conference, Vargas was detained by ICE officials.

"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took Daniela Vargas, 22, an unlawfully present Argentinian citizen, into custody March 1, during a targeted immigration enforcement action in Jackson, Mississippi", the statement said.

Her lawyers said Friday they believe she was detained by ICE as retribution for "speaking out" at the March 1 news conference.

"I think that she's doing pretty well given everything she's gone through", Peterson said.

Vargas immigrated to the USA from Argentina when she was 7 years old.

Before the press conference was held, Peterson said she and Vargas were aware that she could face arrest since her DACA status had expired. This is direct retaliation for her speaking out at the event.
