Wenger drops hint over Arsenal future following cup triumph

The Gunners crashed out of the Champions League after losing 5-1 to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, but they were denied a penalty when leading 1-0.

He acknowledged that the 5-0 FA Cup victory over Lincoln City had been essential for restoring morale but remained adamant that the 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich had not been an embarrassment.

But after that routine win at Emirates Stadium, attention returned to one of the worst results of Wenger's tenure in north London, the Frenchman explaining the rationale behind sticking with numerous players who came unstuck against Bayern. "We want to go again to Wembley to win", he said on BT Sport.

"I've still got to pinch myself about what we've done, to finish it off here in front of 60,000 people, 9,000 travelling fans is unbelievable".

"The players didn't let me down".

According to Wenger, the decision of match official Anastasios Sidiropoulos to dismiss Laurent Koscielny in the 53rd minute sealed the Gunners' fate.

"I wish you'd sit in my seat for a while and then you would realise it's impossible to keep everyone quiet. I watched this game three times now and it's still the referee who killed our game".

Fifth tier leaders Lincoln were the first non-league team to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals in 103 years after a shock win over top-flight side Burnley in the fifth round.

Theo Walcott put Arsenal ahead just before time after an uneventful first half.

It was all Arsenal from there, giving embattled manager Arsene Wenger a much-needed win and the London club a chance at a trophy.

Maintaining confidence after letting in five against a superior side is now the task facing the Lincoln manager Danny Cowley, although he at least was able to admit that his side had been comprehensively outplayed after half-time - as is natural given they were playing a team four divisions above them.

"And overall to respond today, that's what we did".
