Calcutta HC orders CBI probe into murder of CPI(M) leader

Brittany BishopMar 18, 2017

The order has been delivered by the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court Justice Nishitha Mathre and Justice T Chakrabarti. The court also observed that the CBI was the most suitable agency to conduct an independent probe.

The ruling party had dismissed the tapes as "doctored" and said the "dirty tricks departments" of its political opponents were behind the "smear" campaign.

The video caught TMC MPs Saugata Roy, Suvendu Adhikari, Sultan Ahmed, Aparupa Poddar, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Prasun Banerjee, state ministers Subrata Mukherjee, Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra, Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, MLA Iqbal Ahmed and senior IPS officer SMH Mirza allegedly accepting bribe.

Web portal Narada News had released a sting operation conducted on 11 Trinamool Congress leaders which showed them allegedly accepting bribe.

This verdict is really unfortunate and disappointing and my party and government are moving the Supreme Court to get justice, Banerjee said.

Terming the state police a "puppet", the bench said society at large demands proper investigation on the issue. "Wherever there is some whiff of corruption, the link to Kalighat (south Kolkata area where Banerjee resides) is always there".

The Narada sting tapes, which were released before the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections, had shown some persons resembling TMC leaders including ministers taking money. Narada CEO Mathew Samuel said: "It is welcome. and a very fair decision by the Calcutta high court".

Soon after, in June, Banerjee ordered a probe headed by the city Police Commissioner to find out the "conspiracy" angle to the sting.

However, in August, the Calcutta High Court ordered an interim stay on the police probe while hearing the three PILs.
