Trump didn't want to talk details in Freedom Caucus meeting

One day later, Trump and Speaker Paul RyanPaul RyanPete King: Freedom Caucus to blame for failed healthcare bill Fox News host promoted by Trump calls on Paul Ryan to step down Dan Rather: Failure to repeal ObamaCare most "staggering loss" so early in a term MORE (R-Wis.) made a decision to pull the legislation moments before a planned House floor vote after it became clear it would not pass.

The group of conservative agitators who've irked leadership, held the line against spending bills and rebelled against trade priorities of leaders have now helped delay a health care vote at least one day. Leaving this caucus will allow me to be a more effective member of Congress and advocate for the people of Texas.

Two dozen or so Freedom Caucus members have opposed the legislation pushed by GOP leaders, saying it doesn't go far enough to repeal "Obamacare".

"The most valuable player", he said, "will be President Trump on this, because he will deliver".

"It's fairly awesome that even after meeting with President Trump, they are holding out for removing health care from people with pre-existing conditions, something they know could never pass and goes against everything president Trump promised during the campaign", one GOP aide familiar with the whip operation told CNN Thursday as it was growing increasingly clear that the Freedom Caucus wasn't budging enough to make up the difference.

That meant on Friday they could try to do something yet again, with President Trump and even Steve Bannon meeting with the Freedom Caucus to help insure their cooperation. One of the more obvious places to start would be the Congressional Black Caucus, though he appeared, several weeks after he'd become president, to be unaware that such a body existed.

'I deeply regret my comments on such an important topic, ' Roberts said in a statement.

But the group had been negotiating directly with the White House in hopes of reaching agreement to eliminate additional requirements on insurers.

With Democrats set to vote against the legislation, Republicans can not afford to lose more than 21 votes to pass the bill, but they were faced with almost three dozen members of Freedom Caucus, a group within the Republican party, opposed to it. Republicans remain short of votes.

House leadership had tried to declare early on that the House's American Health Care Act wasn't open for major, sweeping changes, a position that was later undermined by Trump's signal to the caucus that he was open to large fixes. He says that people were "given many lies" about the Affordable Care Act.

"In my view this is the first real test of whether we're a governing party - and it's a pretty big test", said Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., who supports the bill.
