Las Vegas just the latest move for vagabond Raiders

Doyle BarkerMar 28, 2017

At the heart of it is a reminder that Oakland has been dragged through this once before and deserves better; letting the Raiders go to Las Vegas, it said, "will once again devastate legendarily loyal fans who have helped the Raiders thrive in Oakland for generations".

Raiders owner Mark Davis needed at least 24 of 32 votes, and after several hours of meetings and presentations Monday at the National Football League annual meetings at the Arizona Biltmore, the approval was announced. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the only team that voted against the move was the Miami Dolphins. In February, Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed "disappointment" in the Chargers' decision to relocate from San Diego to Los Angeles this offseason, adding that the league hadn't "made a determination" on whether Las Vegas could support a full-time NFL franchise.

The Oakland Raiders are officially moving to Las Vegas. Mark Davis says to blame him, and that's where most fans (who wanted the team to stay in Oakland) will point their fingers. The Raiders could spend the next two or even three seasons in the Bay Area before their stadium - whose estimated cost has recently dropped from $1.9 billion to $1.7 billion - is ready.

The Raiders will play in Oakland at least for this season. The Raiders will continue to practice at the team's facility in Alameda, California, while they remain in Oakland. The only stadiums now in use that are older than the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum are Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Soldier Field in Chicago and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which is serving as the temporary home of the Rams. "We're still the Oakland Raiders".

When will the new stadium in Las Vegas be completed?

The Raiders were originally established in Oakland in 1961, before a 12-year move to Los Angeles that ended in 1995.

Renderings show a possible $1.3 billion stadium with $600 million already secured through private funds from the Fortress Investment Group and NFL Hall of Famer and 49ers legend Ronnie Lott. Alternatively, Oakland fans can request and refund and move on, just as the Raiders have.

The Raiders will play in the Bay Area city for two more seasons before heading to Nevada, the team announced. "I also see the joy on the faces of our new fans in Las Vegas". Goodell said the main issues with the city's proposal is the money being contributed by NY hedge fund Fortress Investment Group and city officials' commitment to the Oakland A's baseball team.

The move to Las Vegas now presents new challenges for the team because of the gambling and adult entertainment industries.

So, did the Dolphins just want to make sure that the handsome Miami beaches and awesome weather there remained as one of the most attractive free-agent destinations?
